About the Exam

The “Combined Biotechnology Entrance Examination” (CBEE) is conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on behalf of various participating universities for admission to M.Sc. (Biotechnology); M.Sc. (AGRI.)/M.V.Sc (Biotechnology) & M.Tech (Biotechnology). The entrance examination is held usually in the month of May at 51 centers spread all over the country.

Eligibility for M.Sc. (Biotechnology) Programme

Candidates with Bachelor’s degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in Physical, Biological, Agricultural, Veterinary & Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering / Technology, 4-Years B.S. (Physician Assistant Course); OR Medicine (MBBS) OR BDS with at least 55% marks are eligible to apply for M.Sc. (Biotechnology) programme.

Eligibility for M.Tech (Biotechnology) Programme

Minimum 60% marks or equivalent grade in any one: B.Tech/B.E. in Chemical Engineering/Biochemical Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology, Leather Technology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, B. Pharma, Chemical Technology, OR M.Sc. in Biotechnology, LifeSciences, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Biophysics, Microbial Genetics and Bioinformatics. (Also B.Tech/B.E in Electrochemistry, Bioengineering and M.Sc. in Chemistry & Physics in case of Anna University and M.Sc. in Bioengineering in case of West Bengal University of Technology).

Indian Institutes of Technology are conducted a Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM). The objective of JAM is to provide admissions to various M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-PhD, M.Sc.-PhD Dual Degree and other post-bachelor degree programmes at the IITs based on the performance in a single test and to consolidate Science as a career option for bright students from across the country. In due course, JAM is also expected to become a benchmark for normalizing undergraduate level science education in the country.

Eligibility Criteria

M.Sc. Biotechnology (IITB, IITR): M.Sc.-PhD Dual Degree in Biotechnology (IITB): Bachelor's degree in any branch of Science/ Agriculture / Pharmacy / Veterinary / Engineering / Medicine (MBBS).

Examination Pattern

There is a single three hours duration test paper. The questions for Biotechnology test papers are fully objective type. For wrong answer to an objective type question, candidates will get negative 1/3 (negative one third) of the maximum marks assigned to that question.

The Biotechnology (BT) test paper comprises of Biology (44% weightage), Chemistry (20% weightage), Mathematics (18% weightage) and Physics (18% weightage).
